FALL TERM  2010 SYLLABUS

I.   9/21/10  

Oyster Biology-Advanced (Dr. Susan Ford, Rutgers Haskin Research Lab.)

  • Growth and development

  • Disease and predation

Predator Screen construction (Gef Flimlin, Jeff Silady) and Review and Overview of Fall Term (Dr. Jim Merritt)

  • Review of summer field experiences

  • Describe fall classes and field experiences.

II. 9/28/10

Small Wonders: Plankton and the Barnegat Bay (Cara Muscio, RCE)

  • What is algae? What is it good for?

  • Food webs, nutrients, and the role of plankton

III. 10/5/10

Clam Biology-Advanced (Dr, John Kraeuter, Rutgers Haskin Shellfish Lab)

  • Growth and development

  • Disease and predation

  • Predator screen construction (possible)

IV. 10/12/10

Beyond BBSRP: Community-based Habitat Restoration around the State and around the country (Bill Shadel, American Littoral Society )

V. 10/19/10

Final Class, Graduation for those with all volunteer hours logged in and Awarding of Certification.

Field Trip/Field Work-

All Dates to Be Determined by email and volunteer availability.  There will be one set day in Waretown for Harvesting and Planting so all new volunteers can see and participate in the process of taking up the year old clams and planting new seed.

Clam transfer- Upwellers to Sedge Island and Waretown leases

  • Remove 2009 clams from Sedge and Waretown lease sites and bag

  • Broad cast plant 2009 clams in MCZ or other spots

  • Remove 2010 clams from upwellers

  • Close down upwellers for winter

  •  Transport 2010 clams to Sedge and Waretown

  • Plant 2010 clams on Sedge and Waretown lease sites and cover with screen
