the Island Beach State Park upweller
the ibsp upweller blog
Monday July 23,2007
On a very rainy, windy Monday afternoon BBSRP volunteers Gordon Bautz,Jim Merritt, Manny and Dolores were joined by eight visitors who were interested in shellfish gardening. As we cleaned the upweller silos, the visitors asked questions and also volunteered to help. (One of the visitors made a unsolicited contribution of $10 for our effort!) A Stockton College volunteer measured 100 of our tiny but fast growing clams. A high school senior from NYC measured 100 oysters.
Our shellfish are growing like crazy! Since July 2nd, when we stocked the IBSP upweller with 400,000 clams, our clams have grown from 2 mm to 6.5mm with an average of 3.8mm. The oysters, which were rescued by Marty last November when they fell through the bag, have grown from 7mm to 41.5 mm with an average of 24mm. We had a few barnacles, two sea squirts, and some tiny calcareous worms, but otherwise the silos were quite clean.
