the clam journal

ReClam the Bay is always on the move.  Here's what we've been doing:

Fall 2007 Activity

Look how they have grown. Ten seed next to a dime on July 12 (left).
Ten oysters next to a dime on September 26

Al opens the hatch and prepares the silo to lift on the left. Rick and Al hoist the silo out on the right. It weighs about 120 pounds.

Gary, Rick and Al, on the FLUPSY, are supported by volunteers on the dock who tend the lines.(And freely give advice!)

The silos are transported from the FLUPSY to the boat to go across the bay.

Clam Trail '08

No matter what the weather; hot, cool, cloudy or windy

it's a GREAT time on the Clam Trail!

The clam trail is a fun and educational activity to help young and old to understand Barnegat Bay and how they can enjoy and improve it. People who follow the trail will find "clam clews" and "water wisdom" about shellfish, and how they improve the bay. Kids and adults will learn what everybody or anybody, can do to help the clams help the bay.

What is an upweller?

An upweller is a shallow 15'X 6' tank with sixteen 18" diameter silos. The silos have a fine screen bottom that allows water to flow up (upwell) into the silo. The water then exits through a flow hole cut in the side of the silo near the top.
